Archery has historically been used in warfare and hunting and has evoled in modern times into a precision sport. A person practicing the sport of archery is called an archer. If hunting is involved, the sport is called bowhunting. Bows have been in use for about 10,000 years or more. The most popular bows in use today are the recurve bow, the compound bow and the crossbow. The recurve bow is defined by ends of the limbs that curve slightly forward, which increases the power produced and makes the drawing of the bow slightly smoother. The compound bow uses a series of pullies to lessen the amount of energy required to draw the bow, while increasing the forward energy produced. A crossbow has limbs mounted horizontally on a stock much like a rifle stock. The string is drawn either manually or with a windlass and locked into place and a trigger mechanism releases the arrow.
